The IUSTI World Congress was an opportunity for experts in the field to hear the latest research in sexual and reproductive health. A range of world leading speakers were presented alongside Professor Kelly.

In his opening remarks, Professor Kelly discussed the importance of a unified approach to reducing cases of STIs across Australia, with emphases on syphilis.

'We are currently seeing record high cases of syphilis in Australia,’ Professor Kelly said.

Syphilis was close to elimination in Australia only 15 years ago. However, Australia recorded 20 cases of congenital syphilis, and 10 tragic infant deaths in 2023 – the highest numbers since records began in the 1990s.

’We cannot address syphilis alone – partnership is key. We now have an immense opportunity to double our efforts to combat STIs and prevent them from escalating as public health threats,’ said Professor Kelly.

Overall Professor Kelly felt the event was a success. It provided a great opportunity for the CDC to connect with other leading public health organisations and experts.
