Head of the interim Australian Centre for Disease Control, Professor Paul Kelly, spoke on ABC News Breakfast earlier this week about the upcoming flu season. He discussed why it’s important to get vaccinated against the flu and strongly encouraged Australians to get their vaccine this year.

Professor Kelly said it was particularly important for people in high-risk groups to get vaccinated. These include:

  • children aged 6 months to less than 5 years
  • pregnant women
  • people aged 65 or over
  • First Nations people aged 6 months or over
  • people with particular chronic conditions.

He advised people to get the flu vaccine now, as it is widely available and can protect them from severe flu.
