STI remain a public health challenge in Australia. If left untreated, they can cause serious complications such as infertility, miscarriage and long-term disability.
The draft Fifth National Sexually Transmissible Infections Strategy 2024–2030 will help Australia achieve a world-leading response that enables sexual health and wellbeing for all by 2030.
It outlines the goals, targets, priority populations, settings, and key areas for action to deliver public health and primary healthcare systems to reduce the impact of STI on people’s lives.
It is part of a suite of new national blood borne virus and STI strategies that set the direction for Australia’s response to blood borne viruses and STI in partnership with state and territories governments and the community.
This draft follows extensive consultation with:
- state and territory governments
- peak body representatives
- research institutes
- national community organisations.
The strategy is available for feedback until 20 December.
