Arboviruses are viral infections that can spread from mosquitoes, ticks, sandflies and other blood-sucking insects to humans.
The spread of arboviruses is impacted by the climate, but animals can also become infected, carry the virus and spread it too.
The most common arboviruses known to circulate in Australia include:
- dengue viruses
- Japanese encephalitis
- Ross River virus
- Barmah Forest virus
- Murray Valley encephalitis virus.
